Overview
We are seeking a Senior Linux Systems Engineer who will serve as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in Linux systems, kernel operations, package management, and system optimization across various Linux distributions. This role will be crucial in supporting our Docker image creation process, ensuring that our containers are built on a solid, secure, and efficient Linux foundation.
Responsibilities
- Provide expert-level Linux support and consultation for the Docker image creation team
- Optimize Linux systems and configurations to enhance the security, performance, and efficiency of our Docker images
- Research, evaluate, and implement advanced Linux features and technologies that can benefit our containerized environments
- Develop and maintain comprehensive Linux hardening strategies for various distributions used in our Docker images
- Troubleshoot complex Linux-related issues in containerized environments, focusing on system libraries, kernel interactions, and package dependencies
- Create and maintain custom Linux packages and repositories tailored for our Docker image requirements
- Develop automation scripts and tools to streamline Linux system configurations and optimizations
- Conduct regular security audits and vulnerability assessments of Linux systems and configurations used in our Docker images
- Stay current with the latest developments in Linux technologies, security practices, and performance optimization techniques
- Provide mentorship and training to team members on advanced Linux concepts and best practices
- Collaborate with the Docker Image Engineers to ensure seamless integration of Linux optimizations into the image creation process
- Work closely with Package Compilation teams to ensure the creation of vulnerability-free packages
- Analyze and optimize package installation processes, library usage, and dependency management across different Linux distributions
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Systems Engineering, or a related field; Master's degree preferred
- 7+ years of experience in Linux systems administration and engineering, with a focus on system optimization and security
- Deep understanding of Linux kernel operations, system calls, and low-level system interactions
- Expert-level knowledge of Linux package management systems (e.g., apt, yum, dnf, apk) and dependency resolution
- Strong proficiency in shell scripting (bash/sh) and at least one programming language (e.g., Python, Go, C)
- Extensive experience with Linux security principles, including SELinux/AppArmor, cgroups, and namespaces
- Solid understanding of networking protocols and their implementation in Linux environments
- Experience with performance tuning and optimization of Linux systems for containerized workloads
- Familiarity with container technologies, especially in relation to their interaction with the Linux kernel
- Comprehensive understanding of various Linux distributions (e.g., RHEL, Debian, Ubuntu, Alpine) and their unique characteristics
- Deep knowledge of package installation processes, library management, and dependency resolution across different Linux distributions
- Experience working with package compilation teams and understanding the nuances of creating vulnerability-free packages
Preferred Qualifications
- Relevant Linux certifications (e.g., RHCE, LFCE, LPIC-3)
- Experience with creating and maintaining custom Linux distributions or minimal Linux environments
- Knowledge of advanced Linux storage solutions and file systems optimized for containers
- Familiarity with Linux tracing tools (e.g., strace, ltrace, perf) for performance analysis
- Contributions to Linux kernel development or open-source Linux projects
- Experience with real-time Linux kernel patches and configurations
- Understanding of Linux compliance and licensing implications in containerized environments
